Flashback

We had our Annual Athletic Meet on 3rd April 2008.
The moment I stepped into the stadium I felt nostalgic.
When I saw the track I thought to myself in dismay..."You mean I was able to stride around this 400m track effortlessly?"
I could not believe my eyes...for now me running around the 400m track will be as tiring as me running 1.6km! Oh dear..what has happened to me?
I recalled vividly taking part in my school sports day when I was in Primary 6. I know my teacher did not have much faith in me...For I was surely bigger than the rest who were taking part. Still not overweight but on the brink of being overweight. I told myself when I knew my teacher did not believe in me.... "Aiya just run for the fun of it la".
SO the day came....I was supposed to run the 4x100m race. I remember feeling very anxious and excited. But did not really feel competitive because in my mind I had already decided that I was just running for the experience. Winning was not on my cards at all. One of my close friends was in the race as well. And she was surely much thinner than I was. Haha.
And so my turn came...We were asked to wait around the track for our turn to come.
It was time for my race. We took our positions. It was all so new to me. I had never been on a track and never practised for the race. My heart was beating really fast.
I heard the gun shot and started running and running. I remember I was even smiling to myself haha. Coz I was having fun....As I was striding along I felt funny...Hmm how come there was no one beside or infront of me? I was wondering if I was doing something wrong.Like running the wrong direction or something. Haha....I continued running and by then I realised that I was in first position! Wow I tell he feeling! I was in a state of shock...Then I went to receive my trophy. Will never forget that feeling really....
Then my teacher who did not believe in me walked up to me with a wide smile and congratulated me. She was like, 'Wow I did not expect!" For goodness sake I knew you did not expect la! Then she asked me to take over a girl who was not feeling well for a relay race. I am sure she would have not asked me of all people if I had not won the first race. I ran that relay race too and we came in second. Was even happier..
Hmm Well...I went home feeling so proud of myself that day...And mum was happy to see me happy. But then again in my family of 4 girls I am the one who is the least academically inclined..I was more interested in other stuff other than studying. Remember failing maths and getting whacked by narj. I just refused to study. I just was not very interested. Hehe was such a problem kid at home la. Aiyo was really terrible. Very very naughty and tomboyish. Even the boys were afraid of me when I was the catcher when playing catching haha. Well ya..so my family gave more importance to studying la. So never really got to pursue sports like I would have liked to. I am sure I wun be the inactive blob that I am now if I had been more involved in sports.
By the way there was another shock awaiting me..a few weeks later, Mr Samad the PE HOD came into my class and called me up. I was terrified I tell u. I was wondering what I had done. He brought me to his office and told me that my record for the 4x100m race was only 2 seconds short of the school record. Until now I still wonder if I had heard him wrongly. Haha.I mean i just ran for the fun and tell u frankly it was not to my full potential...coz when I saw no one running near me I slacked....He said he wanted to send me to the National meeting. I was like...WOW! Remember going for training only once.. But the national meet was a flop la! Haha Lost BADLY!
Then when I went in to Secondary school..my form teacher in Sec 1...dunno why she made me the vice captain of my entire Green house. Till now I wonder why. Maybe she wanted to open me up as I was really quiet...The next year I was the house captain of Netball when I did not know much about it...Haha..I remember borrowing a book to learn about it......I did and played the GK role. The first year my team won the 1st prize...Again I felt really happy when we received trophies during assembly. The second year I played GD but my team did not win.
Then went on to poly and received 1st prize for ICS badminton tournament. That was the end la.

Hmm while my sisters were winning trophies after trophies for story telling, poem reading, being top 3 in class, I was just getting trophies for sports...It really did not seem like a big deal cause I felt that I was just not getting there. My trophies did not really mean much when theirs did....I remember feeling very upset when Jal's big trophies were displayed in the hall while mine was chucked into the showcase that was in the room....I treasured the trophies...but then after a while I felt that at the end of the day sports will get me nowhere....even asked mum to throw them away when we were movin house. So I dun have any of my trophies with me now. How dumb of me.....

Now there is much more importance played on CCAs and sports. I am happy..coz there are many kids like me around...Those who have other abilities other than studying will be given a chance to prove themselves...

Look at me now...cun imagine running again...When I run my tummy jiggles so badly that I feel as if my womb is gonna drop out...my knees crack and I feel like a slob. If only I had been more active. Certainly giving birth has taken a toll on my health and fitness but it is stupid of me to keep citing it as an excuse to be so inactive. I have to pull up my socks (literally) and get into an exercise regime. I have to do something about it! I HAVE TO! At the end of the day...the mind is still the most powerful tool. ITS ALL IN THE MIND! I can do it! So can you!
